HMV is to launch an ecommerce website within weeks, allowing customers to buy online for the first time in two years. The digital comeback is the next stage in the retailer's revival as they were recently announced as Britain's biggest music seller once again.

Since Hilco's acquisition of the retailer in 2013, HMV has returned to profit and have unveiled plans to open six more stores in the UK and ten in Ireland. The company trialled a soft website launch in Ireland last year, but until now the website has operated in the style of a music discovery blog with no ecommerce functionality.

Paul McGowan, chief executive of Hilco and HMV said "We are careful that we don't want to overcook it but there is a large potential for the UK website to lift the business. People are switching from downloads to streaming music, so digital is eating digital but physical music sales are recovering."
